Why we’re here
We exist to support and promote the use of the Python programming language in New Zealand.
We work towards this by:
- Running monthly meetings (meetups) in various cities around the country, currently including: Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
- We bring our community of Python developers together every year for the Kiwi PyCon conference, which has been running for over 10 years
- We facilitate discussion about Python by running an electronic mailing list for news, resources, opportunities, and connecting with each other in the Python community
- We share recordings and useful resources for members and the public worldwide, such as the Kiwi PyCon video recordings.
Why Python?
There’s lots of reasons you might want to learn Python – here are just a few:
- Python is easy to get started with
- Python has an active, supportive community
- Python is flexible
- Python as lots of projects
- Python is used in a lot of places
We’re a charity
We were incorporated in 2009 (Society Number 2250349) and was officially registered as a charity on the 16th of February 2016 (Charity Registration Number CC52902). In 2024 we adopted Python New Zealand as a trading name in addition to our charity name New Zealand Python User Group (NZPUG).
We operate with the funds we receive from our members and the many hours of time, effort and care put in to the community by a whole range of volunteers.
We have a charter and rules
Python New Zealand (legally New Zealand Python User Group Incorporated) is governed by its charter which lays out the rules of the society. The society is run by its members.
Every member of Python New Zealand and everyone who attends a Python New Zealand event or participates in one of our initiatives is subject to the Code of Conduct.
All of the initiatives and the governance of Python New Zealand are done by members who volunteer their time, expertise, and effort. Each year a committee is elected to manage the organisation and co-ordinate its initiatives, in line with our purpose and charter.
We welcome new members
We’re always happy to see new people join the community and join Python New Zealand. If you would like to become a member, or donate to the work we do then please head on over to Become a Member.
